Dressing For A Garden Wedding
Journal
Recently, we had the pleasure of crafting a bespoke suit for our client Wilson for his garden wedding. Our tailors crafted a refined, breathable masterpiece that perfectly balanced classic tailoring with the practical needs of an outdoor celebration.
A Few Words About Drapers
Drapers Italy has been a leader in fine suiting fabrics since 1956. As a distinguished cloth merchant (closely tied to the legendary Vitale Barberis Canonico mill), Drapers doesn’t just produce fabric — they curate exceptional blends that combine Italian craftsmanship with modern performance. Their collections are prized by bespoke tailors worldwide for their exquisite hand-feel and versatility.
Creamy Ivory Twill Wool-Silk-Cotton, By Drapers “Golden Selection”
For Wilson’s outdoor garden ceremony, we selected a beautiful creamy ivory twill from Drapers — a luxurious blend of wool, silk, and cotton. The wool provides natural structure and resilience, the silk adds a subtle lustre and softness against the skin, and the cotton delivers exceptional breathability. The twill weave gives the cloth a refined texture that catches the light beautifully in photographs while remaining lightweight enough for Hong Kong’s humidity and a sunny garden setting. This combination ensured Wilson stayed cool and comfortable throughout the ceremony and reception without sacrificing sophistication.
The Cut: Relaxed Double-Breasted 6×2 for Effortless Style
We tailored the suit in a relaxed fit to maximise airflow and movement — essential for a garden wedding where the groom is constantly on his feet greeting guests. The jacket is a classic double-breasted 6-button 2 style, offering a strong, architectural presence while maintaining an approachable, modern feel.
The lapels were cut wide at 3¾ inches — a bold yet timeless proportion that frames the face handsomely and adds gravitas to every photo. Shoulders were softly structured to create a broader, masculine silhouette, enhancing Wilson’s natural presence as he stood beside his bride. Inside, the jacket is fully canvassed using our signature lightweight linen-and-cotton based canvas. This construction method (rare in off-the-rack suits) delivers superior drape, shape retention, and breathability while remaining feather-light — perfect for all-day wear in warm weather.
The buttons are genuine white corozo — a natural, sustainable nut material that adds subtle contrast and an organic touch against the creamy ivory cloth.
Trousers: High-Waist, Wide-Cut Perfection
To complement the jacket and create the most flattering proportions, we designed high-waisted trousers with a generous wide cut. The elevated waist elongates the leg line dramatically — a subtle but powerful detail that makes the groom appear taller and more statuesque when standing next to his bride for portraits. Side adjusters replace bulky belt loops for a cleaner, more elegant line, while turned-up cuffs and a razor-sharp crease pressed into the front give the trousers a crisp, formal finish that photographs beautifully.
The Final Result
Wilson’s completed suit was the perfect harmony of comfort and ceremony: lightweight and breathable for the garden setting, yet impeccably structured to project confidence and masculinity. When he tried it on for the final fitting, the smile said everything — this was a suit that made him feel like the leading man he truly is.
